Astaxanthin is a natural deep-red pigment found in many marine creatures such as crabs, shrimp, salmon and even in land-dwelling species like flamingos. In particular, green microalgae (Haematococcus Pluvialis) is the organism that produces the highest concentration of Astaxanthin.

To demonstrate Astaxanthin's superior cell-protecting ability more clearly, a study was conducted: cells were soaked with 8 common antioxidants including Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Beta Carotene (provitamin A), CoQ10, Catechin, Alpha Lipoic acid, Lutein and Astaxanthin. The cells were then damaged by exposing them to harmful free radicals. The result was surprising: among the 8 antioxidants, only the cells protected by Astaxanthin had a survival rate as high as 91.7%, far surpassing all the other compounds.

When cultivated in outdoor bodies of water, Astaxanthin often faces the risk of contamination from the environment, and the yield obtained is quite low. To overcome this, AstaReal Japan has developed and built a technology for cultivating microalgae in indoor photobioreactors, combined with a process of strict control over temperature, light and so on at each stage of the algae's growth.
